2025 updates on new Science Diplomacy events and networks

The S4D4C network and broader community are still engaged and active and we feel like providing you with a few updates.

European Science Diplomacy Alliance

The European Science Diplomacy Alliance, which has been launched at the final project conference in 2021 is growing. It facilitates interactions and dialogue, training, institutional capacity building and coordination of grant-seeking or use of joint funding, if available. The list of members is continously growing – see our Members • science-diplomacy.eu for more information. The Alliance also regularly issues a newsletter, which we can only recommend: Newsletter • science-diplomacy.eu and it still hosts the online course, which S4D4C created: Online Course • science-diplomacy.eu

A European Framework for Science Diplomacy – Recommendations of the EU Science Diplomacy Working Groups

With input of several members of the Alliance, the expert report A European Framework for Science Diplomacy – Recommendations of the EU Science Diplomacy Working Groups was released in 2025. It presents the results of five EU Science Diplomacy Working Groups that were established by the European Commission in order to develop recommendations for a European Framework for Science Diplomacy. The working groups consisted of 130 science and diplomacy experts from across Europe, with each group being co-chaired by a scientist and a diplomat. The recommendations are intended to inform future policy action.

Second European Science Diplomacy Conference

In 2025, we are participating and in the Second European Science Diplomacy Conference: Bridging divides in a fragmented world (17-18 December, hybrid: Copenhagen, Denmark and online). The event is open to everybody interested in the advancement of science diplomacy. There is no conference fee. The programme will explore both regional and thematic dimensions, while also highlighting the crucial contributions of non-state actors. It will provide a platform for policymakers, scientists, diplomats, business and civil society to engage in a dialogue on Europe’s role as a global science and technology leader, committed to peace, multilateralism and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals: https://eu-science-diplomacy.service-facility.eu/ Former S4D4C coordinator (Zentrum für Soziale Innovation) and partner (DLR) support the organisation of the conference in the framework of the Service Facility in support of the Global Approach in Research and Innovation (GSF) Framework Contract.

Science in Diplomacy Network: implementing multilateral policymaking in intersectoral, cross-disciplinary & strategic domains

Another highlight of the year is the launch of the COST Action SiDNet (13 October 2025) which addresses the need for advancing science diplomacy through the establishment of four interconnected Working Groups, each focusing on a different aspect of science diplomacy. WG1, “Diplomacy for Science within technological sovereignty and governance,” seeks to facilitate international scientific collaboration while addressing concerns related to technological sovereignty, data governance, and security. WG2, “Science in Diplomacy for global challenges and sustainability,” aims to integrate scientific advice into foreign policy, especially in relation to global challenges like climate change. WG3, “Science for Diplomacy via international scientific cooperation in difficult geopolitical contexts,” focuses on using scientific collaboration to improve relations between nations, especially in regions of geopolitical tension. WG4, “Communication, Dissemination, Training, and Networking,” ensures the widespread impact of the Action through public outreach, training and effective dissemination of results. A growing network of 30+ countries is going to promote the multidisciplinary, intersectoral cross-cutting field. More information on how to join the Action is provided here: https://www.cost.eu/actions/CA24169/
