National thematic networks addressing global challenges

National thematic networks strengthen the ecosystem of a country to engage with the international partners, including on science diplomacy.

Examples:

The Netherlands Water Partnership is a network of Dutch organisations in the water sector with international ambitions. NWP’s members include companies, government agencies, knowledge institutions and NGOs with one common goal – to join forces for sustainable water solutions worldwide.

Climate Change Centre Austria (CCCA) coordinates a network of institutions for the promotion of climate research in Austria. The aims include to strengthen Austrian climate research, to facilitate the education of a new generation of researchers and supporting knowledge transfer, to support science transfer and to advise politics and society. CCCA contributes also to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) main tasks to gather scientific, technical, and socio-economic knowledge and asses it from a scientific point of view.

The Atmosphere and Climate Competence Center (ACCC) in Finland (bringing together University of Helsinki, Finnish Meteorological Institute, University of Eastern Finland, Tampere University) also emphasises the importance of Science Diplomacy for this flagship initiative (see for example here).
