Scientific Advice Mechanisms

The EU Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM) comprises a secretariat in the Commission’s research and innovation department, a group of seven Chief Scientific Advisory and an initiative called SAPEA:

The project “Science Advice for Policy by European Academies” (SAPEA) brings together 100 academies and societies from all scientific fields and from a wide variety of countries.

The Group of Chief Scientific Advisors is an expert group of the European Commission and provides independent scientific advice to European Commissioners to support their decision-making. They also work to strengthen connections between Europe’s academies and Academy Networks, and to stimulate debate in Europe about the role of evidence in policy-making.

The group is supported by a dedicated Unit staffed by the European Commission’s Research and Innovation and Joint Research Centre Directorates General.
