Transdisciplinary research institutes and think tanks

Science for and in diplomacy for addressing global challenges needs to be transdisciplinary and oriented towards the relevant challenges. Think tanks are also combining research with policy impact and in the following are a few examples of transdisciplinary institutes provided.

Examples:

KWR Water Research Institute (the Netherlands) has the motto ‘Bridging Science to Practice’. KWR generates knowledge to enable the water sector to operate water-wisely in our urbanised society. At KWR, there is a sense of professional and social responsibility for the quality of water. Scientific findings and the resulting practical innovations contribute to a sustainable water provision in the urban watercycle, worldwide. The strength lies in the translation of scientific knowledge into applicable, practical solutions for end-users in the Dutch and international water sector. KWR’s ambition is to be at the forefront of scientific solutions to global water issues, both nationally and internationally, through high-quality and excellent research.

Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) (Sweden) connects science and decision-making to develop solutions for a sustainable future for all. The work spans climate, water, air and land-use issues, governance, the economy, gender and health. Stakeholder involvement is at the heart of the efforts to build capacity, strengthen institutions and equip partners for long-term change.
SEIs knowledge and findings are accessible to decision-makers and civil society: as its own open access material, in leading academic journals, and repackaged for effective decision support. To promote debate and share knowledge SEI convenes decision-makers, academics and practitioners and engages with policy processes, development action and business practice worldwide.

NewClimate Institute for Climate Policy and Global Sustainability (Germany) generates ideas on climate change and drives implementation. It raises ambition for action against climate change and supports sustainable development through research, policy design and knowledge sharing. It is committed to delivering high-quality results and workable solutions to the public and decision-makers by applying research-oriented, robust approaches, responding to on-the-ground realities. From its base in Germany, the institute seeks to enhance and foster knowledge sharing and exchange with other institutions and individuals around the globe.

Fondazione ENI Enrico Mattei (FEEM), a non profit, was founded in 1989. It is a policy-oriented, international research centre and a think-tank producing high-quality, innovative, interdisciplinary and scientifically sound research on sustainable development. It contributes to the quality of decision-making in public and private spheres through analytical studies, policy advice, scientific dissemination and high-level education. Thanks to its international network, FEEM integrates its research and dissemination activities with those of the best academic institutions and think tanks around the world.

Clingendael Institute, the Netherlands Institute of International Relations, is a leading think tank and academy on international affairs. Through analyses, training, and public debate they aim to inspire and equip governments, businesses, and civil society in order to contribute to a secure, sustainable and just world.

The Elcano Royal Institute is a think tank specialised in international and strategic studies conducted from a Spanish, European and global perspective. Its goal is to promote knowledge of the current international situation and of Spain’s foreign relations, as well as to provide a focal point for debating and generating ideas that may prove useful in the decision-making processes of political office-holders, the leaders of private enterprises and public institutions, social actors and academics.
