Global NPOs, NGOs and philantropic foundations

Philanthropic foundations and large international non-profit organisations, as well as non-governmental organisations, support science through different instruments (e.g. projects, scholarships, grants, commissioned research, etc.).

Examples:

Wetlands International is a global not-for-profit organisation (NGO) dedicated to the conservation and restoration of wetlands. They do this by understanding and tackling the underlying causes of wetland loss and damage. They are deeply concerned about the loss and deterioration of wetlands such as lakes, marshes and rivers. The knowledge-base and advocacy enable actions to safeguard and restore wetlands and to use them in sustainable ways.

The United Philanthropy Forum created the Momentum Fund that distributes resources with a specific focus on communities most impacted by the ongoing public health and economic crises, it cooperates for example with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, builds the capacity of local funders, philanthropic-serving organizations, and community-led nonprofits that are currently supporting other nonprofits.

The Global Water Research Coalition (GWRC) is a non-profit organisation that serves as a collaborative mechanism for water research. The services the GWRC offers to its members are water research information and knowledge. The GWRC does not compete with the member organisations, which focus on national and regional water research issues. The GWRC serves as a trusted source of high quality scientific and technical information to inform regulators and policymakers, and to help advance the understanding of consumers, regulators and policymakers on critical issues.

Bioversity International celebrated its 45th anniversary in 2019. The organisation’s focus has changed over time. Early work focused on the emergency conservation of crop genetic resources in genebanks. Today it delivers scientific evidence, management practices and policy options to use and safeguard agricultural biodiversity to attain sustainable global food and nutrition security.
